The end of the year has come and gone; it is time to reflect and look back on 2018. And what a great year it was. We had a lot of fun spotting a variety of cars and trucks around Los Angeles. We are thankful that Los Angeles provides us with warm weather and sunshine for most of the year, thus preserving beautiful vintage, mid-modern and current vehicles from the grips of rust. The near constant sunshine means that people actually DRIVE these cars year round, a blessing not found in many other cities or states. Los Angeles provides for us sunshine and awesome cars, and I want to pass that on to everyone reading. That’s what this site is all about; finding cool street cars and sharing them with the world. We especially want to thank you, the reader and viewers of LACS. We do this for you.
The 2019 year should shake out to be a big one for LA car spotting. We plan to expand the web content to include videos and more editorial content.

Here’s a look back at our favorite spotting’s in 2018:
As is usual for the end of the month, we post pictures of the vehicles that did not make the cut for a full feature. To be honest, there were not many this month but none-the-less, let the hodgepodge commence.
Spotted this very clean Porsche 924 Turbo at the grocery store parking lot the other day. The 924 is a really cool example of VAG stretching it’s legs outside of the 911 market. There were roughly 15,000 of these made worldwide and given the less than stellar reliability of these cars, I’m sure more than a few have found their way to the pick-n-pull yards. It was dark out and I only had my phone with me so the pics are not great!

Spotted this gorgeous BMW Z8 roadster coupe in Malibu the other day. The gentleman had just bought it and was driving it back to Los Angeles. It was in beautiful shape and very low miles. Did you know that less than 6,000 were produced worldwide and only about 2,500 made it to the USA? Awesome to see one in person being driven.
The first end of month hodgepodge of 2018 and it is … well… not much. I didn’t have a chance to get out and go spotting much this month with work consuming all but 1 week this month. Enjoy
Spotted this lovely E30 BMW in Silverlake, Los Angeles CA. The rims choice sets off the teal paint very nicely.

The BMW E30 is an entry-level luxury car which was produced by BMW from 1982 to 1994. The initial models used the coupe(two-door sedan) body style. Four-door sedan models were introduced in 1983, convertibles were introduced in 1985 and estate(“Touring”) models were introduced in 1987. The E36 replaced the E30 coupe models in 1990, with other E30 body styles being phased out of production until the final E30 model, a Touring, was produced in 1994.
The E30 was the first 3 Series to be available in wagon and four-door sedan body styles. It was also the first 3 Series to offer a diesel engine, and all-wheel drive was introduced to the 3 Series range with the 325iX model. The BMW Z1 roadster was based on the E30 platform.
The first BMW M3 was built on the E30 platform. The E30 M3 is powered by the high-revving BMW S14 four-cylinder petrol engine, which produced 175 kW (235 hp) in its final European-only iteration.
As I took a picture of this car, I was swept away to high school days with a Rabbit Cabriolet leaving on the last day of school, teenagers filled to the brim. Why does this vehicle seem so quintessential to summer days and young folks? It is the perfect combination of affordable transportation and top-down summer fun body architecture.

Here is some brief info about the VW Cabriolet.
The convertible version, named the Golf Cabriolet (or Typ 155) in Europe and Canada (“Rabbit Convertible” in America originally and renamed in 1985 to “Cabriolet”), was sold from 1980 to 1993. It had a reinforced body, transverse roll bar, and a high level of trim, and kept the pre-1980 style of rear lamp clusters. The Mk1 Cabriolet is of unibody construction built entirely at the factory of Karmann, from stamping to final assembly; Volkswagen supplied the engine, suspension, interior, etc. for Karmann to install. The vinyl or cloth tops were heavily insulated and manually – or beginning in 1991, electrically – operated, with a heated glass rear window.
The body of the Cabriolet did not change through the entire production run except for a larger fuel tank. The space saver wheel was fitted from the outset in 1978, when pre production models were built, unlike the saloon which adopted this in 1984. In an attempt by Volkswagen to keep the car’s styling current, all Cabriolets from 1988 on were fitted with a “Clipper” kit out of the factory, featuring smooth body-coloured bumpers, wheelarch extensions, and side skirts.
Prior to the 1984 model year the highest standard specification was the GLI, essentially a GTI but sporting a different moniker. It was only in 1984 that an officially badged GTI version of the cabriolet finally became available.
Now this is a car that has seen it’s fair share of abuse and neglect. At least in the looks department, this 1970 BMW 02 Series has seen better days. Yet even beneath the rust and grime, the soft curves and sweepings lines of the 2002 are hard to ignore. Did you know that BMW’s first turbo production car was the 2002 Turbo?

The BMW 02 Series is a range of compact executive cars produced by German automaker BMW between 1966 and 1977, based on a shortened version of the New Class Sedans. The 02 Series caught enthusiasts’ attention and established BMW as an international brand.
The 1600-2 (the “-2” meaning “2-door”) made its debut at the Geneva auto show in March 1966 and was sold through 1975, with the designation being simplified to “1602” in 1971. The 1.6 L M10 engine produced 63 kW (84 hp) at 5,700 rpm and 130 N·m (96 lb·ft) at 3,500 rpm. In 1968, Road & Track declared the US$2676 1600 “a great automobile for the price”.
A high performance version, the 1600 TI, was introduced in September 1967. With a compression ratio of 9.5:1 and the dual Solex PHH side-draft carburettor system from the 1800 TI, the 1600 TI produced 82 kW (110 hp) at 6,000 rpm. Kerb weight for the 1600 TI is 960 kg (2,120 lb).
Helmut Werner Bönsch, BMW’s director of product planning, and Alex von Falkenhausen, designer of the M10 engine, each had a two litre engine installed in a 1600-2 for their respective personal use. When they realized they had both made the same modification to their own cars, they prepared a joint proposal to BMW’s board to manufacture a two litre version of the 1600-2. At the same time, American importer Max Hoffman was asking BMW for a sporting version of the 02 series that could be sold in the United States.
We’re sticking with the German theme from the spotting 2 days ago with this 1987 BMW 635 CSi Coupe. The 6 series coupe is still around today and seems to share a lot of the same characteristics as it’s earlier brethren: large engine, big body coupe with luxury and style to boot! This one is in great condition and has those fantastic gold basket weave OEM rims. Enjoy.

Some info about the late 80’s BMW 6 series:
The BMW E24 is the first generation of BMW 6 Series grand tourer coupes and was produced from 1976 to 1988. It replaced the E9 coupes and was replaced, after a 16-year hiatus, in 2004 by the E63 6 Series. Aside from the M635csi/M6 models, the E24 was powered by a range of M30 straight-6 engines.
The E24 M635csi (called the M6 in the United States and Japan) is considered the start of the M6 model line. In most markets, the M635csi is powered by the M88 straight-6. In the United States and Japan, the M6 is powered by the less powerful S38straight-6 engine.
Spotted this very clean and well-looked after example of the Mercedes Benz SL500 from the 1990’s. I have always admired the styling on the SL series and I believe it holds up well in the over 20 years since this chassis was released. And you can’t go wrong with a 5 liter V8 under the hood 🙂

Some info about this vehicle:
The Mercedes-Benz R129 SL roadsters were produced from 1989 through 2002. The R129 replaced the R107 in 1989 and was in its turn replaced by the R230 SL-Class in 2002 for the 2003 model year.
The R129 was produced as a two-door, two-seat roadster with an automated (electro-hydraulic), collapsible textile roof, with a shell-like, color-matched, tonneau cover. All R129s came standard with an aluminum detachable hardtop that was fitted by folding the canvas roof down and manually attaching the hardtop.
